Japonisme, in real time.

Japonisme is typically defined as the Japanese influence on Western culture, specifically art. I had never been to Asia prior to moving to Tokyo, and felt like I was arriving as a blank canvas. I wanted to capture and create a story of the place Japan as I came to know it, but in doing so was also capturing its influence on me, an American artist in Japan. These photographs became a depiction of the relationship between myself and Japan, August-December 2014. This was, to me, japonisme in real time.

A selection of this series was featured in the Soap Factory’s Volunteer Biennial in Minneapolis in 2017.
